So the final decision is that the Mother Tongue (MT) weightage will be maintained, and that they'll be coming up with new teaching approaches and whatnot.

(you can choose to ignore whatever I've typed below. The topic triggered an urge to type cos it just made me kindda miss primary & secondary school life, which was much simpler. Sighs)

I like that move because I don't see why they should reduce the weightage of MT to help those who're not that strong in MT, at the expense of those who're good at it!
If the weightage was to be reduced, doesn't it mean that the English language weightage would have to be reduced also because there are also people who have a weaker command in English compared to their MT?
English being the primary language doesn't give any rights for us to neglect MT, and make it appear less important than English.

Chinese wasn't much of a problem for me during Primary School days and I even managed to get into the best stream and took Higher Chinese, but I struggled so hard with it during Secondary School.
Believe me or not, I had failing grades in my report book for Chinese (during sec 3) and ended up being posted to the Chinese Band 4 Class - out of 5 bands, the worst being Band 5.

I couldn't read one proper passage without skipping over words, nor can I understand the passage I read, which resulted in my horrible grades for comprehension.
But writing Chinese essays wasn't much of a problem, because we're allowed to use the dictionary to check for words which we didn't know how to write.
Besides, I don't have an excuse to write crappy essays because my parents are mandarin-speaking. XD

Although I have yet to master Chinese totally but at least, I can write simple notes and hold a decent conversation with someone who speaks only Chinese, albeit a bit slow & in a mix of English, hand-gestures, and Chinese. (but well, they do understand me still)

We don't fully comprehend the need for Chinese (or other MT languages), but in a country like Singapore, can you imagine if we speak only English and nothing else? Think about it.

Look at the hospitals, if everyone's english speaking and a non-english speaking patient comes, are they gonna do hand-gestures and try to make the patient understand you? Getting a translator to do the translation adds on the the need of more manpower (can you imagine how many translators will be needed!). Simple neighborhood places like coffeeshops, do they also need translators to be sitting next to the shop owners just in case any non-english speaking customers come?

As much as I hated studying Chinese, knowing English only is just not enough.
Bilingualism FTW. :D
(even with bilingualism, we still struggle with the different dialects. & I'm even more guilty of that. I'm not even able to communicate with my grandma cos she can only understand hokkien)

Remembered how the chinese handwriting of some other people were so neat & nice that I envied it so much that I always try hard to make my chinese handwriting look nice like theirs. Right now, I think my chinese writings would probably look like a primary school kid's. :\

Haha, in the end I didnt eye anything from the lj link you gave.
Well, I did but that whole damn website that I was eyeing was in korean (Gmarket). HOW TO ORDER SIA! hahaha so I gave up and went to the singapore gmarket to check out instead. :p

Hello Blogspot! How's life without me here?
I've hopped onto wordpress & I've been using it for quite some time, but no one knows about my wordpress link yet. I still can't bear to move my ass there cos I can't part with Blogspot's freedom on their blogskin (which is impt for me). But wordpress' organisation of posts is so much neater. Ugh, what shld I do?

I'VE FINALLY FINISHED IRIS!
(watched most of it on my mp4, lying on my bed, before going to sleep. haha)

I started cos TOP looked simply irresistable in all the youtube cuts. :\
But after a few episodes, I'm hooked to the show itself, not TOP.
The suspense is too much for me to not go on watching the next episode.

Sad to say, TOP's role is soooooooo redudant.
Don't understand why he's part of the "main cast" when I think he did not even appear for more than an episode worth of screentime!
Must be a ploy to attract all the fangirls! Urgh.
I think his name wasn't even mention in the whole show. -.-
& those supporting actors had a even longer screentime than TOP did. D:

Blahhhhh, this is so irritating ):
Sitting & typing for the whole day since this afternoon is making me ache all over.
My shouders are stiff, and my back is aching.

Report-writing sucks the life out of you, but science reports add suicidal thoughts to you. :(
We're all saying things like: kill me/ shoot me/ stab me/ & die lahhhh! for the past whole week. Lol. Don't you feel like you did the same thing too? (Now, you're lying if you said no. I bet even the smartest one in our school will complain, just not this much)

and I think after all of the chionging is over, I'm gonna be blind. :\

SERIOUSLY I HOPE MY MONITOR DOESN'T GET FRIED UNTIL AT LEAST I'M DONE WITH ALL THE CRAP FOR THIS SEMESTER.
My monitor crashed for a moment when I started my computer today. Had it really been just an empty shell there & then, I think I'm dead meat.

A broken down monitor is worst than a crashing CPU.
I can revive a crashing CPU but not a broken down monitor. So, you'd better be good!

Report was hell lots of work, with endless problems & questions.

Anyway, it's something interesting that I saw while researching for MP. (Coomassie Blue that you use to do gel staining, or rather an almost similar compound that can be found in blue M&Ms, was able to improve the condition of the spinal injuries that the lab mice suffered)
Yes, it's totally not related to my project, don't have to bother knowing how I end up reading this article.
I read cos what caught my attention was "the mice turned blue in color".

One day before thirty-first

It's second last day before we step into the next decade of this millenium.
Reflecting back & looking at all that've happened for this whole year,
one can't help but feel nostalgic about all that has taken place - the good, and the bad.

I can't remember everything that has happened,
but there's some that'll forever be etched in my heart.

There were quite a few "first" for me this year, and they've left behind something memorable. (:
In my entire 19 years on earth, to still have some "first-time", it's still quite unbelievable. (especially since it's something that others might've alrdy done them countless of times at my age)

Among them, the best wld have to be the first concert (JJ's Concert - Big thanks to Aileen & Sitong) of my lifetime and the first job (but I've yet to receive my first salary!) since my existence on earth, and not forgetting that this was the year that I cleared all of my modules in one exam (without needing to take supp. papers). :D

Besides, the good & fun times I had, there were many horrible & stressful periods that I went through. One almost caused me to breakdown alone in public, to scream the person's head off, to just throw it all aside & not bother anymore. But no matter how harsh the situation gets, I'll hardly end up doing those things. I don't know how I managed to keep everything inside & forget about it eventually, but I thank God that I survived through all the lowest moments in life.

The last quarter of the year has been the most crazy period of my life - juggling school's demand, work from internship, epectations from children's church, and my little part of being 1/3 of the birthday coordinator in cell. I know it's nothing much compared to others, but with this, I'm already struggling to keep myself alive.

Having worked as an attachment student for the past 16 weeks, I realised that my future job is gonna be a fiercely competitive one. Being a science student is definitely not easy (especially for this not so smart kid here), and I wonder if I'm really gonna continue in this line after graduation. (Okay, sorry, I've digressed)

Made & lost some friends here and there.
Bonds were formed, and the memories will stay.
But most importantly, I've learnt many new things this year. (:

Challenges come when you are the least prepared for it. The year is coming to an end, but who would've thought that I'd be so stressed out with so many things. Despite going through the countless ups and downs in 2009, I thank God with all my heart for all that has happened this year. :D

For all my precious friends, no matter how distant you feel that you are from me, I love you alot alot alot! I'd love to give all of you a big tight hug for being there for me, and for the most simple reason - being my friend. No matter how irritating you can be, each one of you hold a special place in my heart. (:

Whenever you reflect back on the year,
it just feels like it was much worse than the year before.
But that'll also mean that you've only learnt many valuable lessons, & have grown much stronger & resilient than before...

24th December 2009 marks the end of our attachment.
Yes, our internship got cut short, abruptly.
Still having mixed emotions about it.
Relieved, that it's over (to be off from one side of stress).
But sad about the whole incident. :(

Not gonna mention details here.
(don't wannt get into trouble)
So TALK TO MEEEEEE! If you wanna know what happened.

to make things worst, we got news about it ytd morning- on Christmas Eve.
Where's all the love, joy & peace for our Christmas? Sighs.

Now that we don't have to report for work, we have to rush out our report at home & submit to her in Jan. (with as much details as possible)
and a second draft to her, using the rules that the school has (like page number, etc.)
Hopefully, I don't go mad with the 2 reports (SIP & MP report).
At least, I shld be glad that I'm more blessed than my friends.

SW Lab, I'll miss the times that we've all spent together.
The times when we stayed behind to rehearse, the times whereby we'd squeeze & say "excuse me!!!" while working at the bench, the times when we'd complain to one another about the accumulating pipette tip boxes, the times when they'd tease agnes & me about the "taking pictures" incident, etc.

If all goes as planned, I MIGHT be returning back as part-timer (not full time cos I still have to return back to sch next sem).
Oh well, God, just let the chalk talk session go through smoothly & let all the students graduate!

16 weeks - neither long, nor short.
But what I can say is that, I think I've learnt the most among all of my friends.
Going through so much ups & downs with the whole lab, and seeing so many different things happening, I don't think I made a wrong decision to not be doing in-house attachment.
The many things that've happened since both Agnes & I joined, it's not something that everyone will encounter within a short period of 16 weeks.

Tell me, how many of you had to perform during your internship period in a LABORATORY??? Lol.

It's friendship made, bonds formed, and lessons learnt. :D

BB's koe wo kikasete (that MV up on my blog for now) has been on repeat ever since the day MV was out. :\

Had a long day since friday.
Met up with Char after work to get some stuff & then to her house to get the party packs for the new friends done.
Left her house at around 1130pm, with bags of bulky deco stuff.
So I cabbed home from there.
& someone just jumped my queue you know! Right beside me!
It's not those that pop up some distance infront of you after you've been standing for some time. I was alrdy there waiting, when they came, stood less than a metre from me at the condo entrance, & they had the guts to not ask if I was waiting for a cab & just boarded it! Grrrrrrr.

Life really is no-life during SIP period.
After 5 weeks of being on our own (without our boss), I'm anticipating what's it gonna be like from monday onwards. But yet, apprehensive at the same time.
Can I keep myself sane? I don't know.
Who knows, I might not even be in the right mind now with all the crap running through my mind.

Half my mouth (right side) is useless now.
I can only chew on my left side. With this, how am I gonna enjoy the food tmr at the wedding?! :(

I'm still stuck with the vector construction for the knockout mice.

& we're also supposed to expand (for about a paragraph) on what we know about the major project.

that one paragraph sounds simple,
but the problem is, I don't know anything about it.
So I've got nothing to expand on. Hahaha. But since it's what I need to do, that'll mean more researching!!! ahhhhh~!

Though happy things did happen today (like giving Dasha a birthday surprise - which she really did fell for), I just can't hide the negativity.

Just before lunch today, I made the first screwed up moment of my SIP life. (sorry!)
Damn screwed, cos it's a mistake that can never be reversed, a process that will give nothing even if you redid the whole experiment. You can only "undo" it if you operate on the person again.

MAJOR MAD SCREWED UP. ARGH :(
I hope the remaining cells (very very very little only) will multiply. If not...

Did quite a lot of things.
Shan't go too much into the details.
I just wanna record them down so that I can refer if I ever forget. (But, I hope I don't ever need to come dig my entries)

Monday, 14th Sept 09

Did some refilling of pipette tips & stuff
Both of us started on Western Blotting (tgt with Linglee & Weihan)
TC work: Check cultures, learn to coat dish with collagen & how to freeze the cells.

First overtime on this day! hahaha. XD
(& the tumour tissue samples that we've been waiting for since last week weren't here today)

Tuesday, 15th Sept 09

Continued with Western Blotting
Attended our 2nd lab meeting.
First tumour tissue sample came today! :D (Hahaha, Linglee asked why were the both of us so excited. LOL, something new whatttt. Of course excited la. Heh heh)
Did what we're supposed to do for the samples, & halfway through we were told that there's another set of sample. ;D But we're gonna do RNA extraction for the second set.

So, yup, that's for today!

AND GUESS WHAT
We've got a new research to do again!
Lol, haven't even completed the mouse knockout yet! Jialat! Arghhhhhhh ):
She mailed us on monday afternoon. Saw it on tuesday, sometime after midnight.
This time, to check out on commercial expression arrays. D:

And, I feel kindda lost during Western Blotting.
Hahaha, don't really rmbr the things I've learnt for that alr. :\

Yes, I was crazy enough to count before SIP started.
in actual fact, if you cut out all those public holidays; Deepavali, Hari Raya, Christmas, New Year Day, etc. I think we're left with about 18 weeks. Haha!

Did Genomic DNA extraction on Friday.
(Okay, fine, we didn't do it entirely on our own, we just helped LingLee out with it)

But we added the wrong reagent! Hahahah, cos of distraction. Lol.
In the end, our yield was super low. :\

& well, that was the only experiment we did for that day.
I know we're slack, don't remind me.
I think we should just take this one month's time that our supervisor is away to learn as much as we can. So that we don't screw up when she comes back.

Went to do a little bit of our knockout mice research.
Cldn't really figure out anything. :\

So that means she wants hRif 1 to be knocked out, right?
So doesn't it mean that hRif 1 has to be present in the mice first, before you can knock it out?
If that's the case, that 'h' in hRif stands for human. How then is it found in mice?

Yesssss, it's finally time for me to say hello to the rubber gloves!
That familiar piece of rubber that leaves behind a terrible smell on your hands..
We're finally able to put them on! Hahaha, sounds like some huge accomplishment right?
(cos we haven't been doing much lab work since monday)

Watched Linglee carry out maxiprep (plasmid extraction) & we helped a little here & there.
Did DNA quantification after that, using Nanodrop.
I forgot how we quantified DNA already leh. Was it using spectrophotometer?
But anyway, that Nanodrop thing only needs like 2ul to quantify mann.
So little! Ha.. That's why it's called Nanodrop. =p

Before that, Weihan (tsk, this name ah, I keep mixing it up in my head with Hanwei leh!) told us about the protocol that we'll need this coming monday.
So what's happening on monday?
We're gonna collect breast cancer tissue from NUH and then culture it.
The next paragraph sounds like some drama having emergency case or smthg.
Hahahaha! (watch too much shows alr)

Firstly, NUH will call us
& we'll have to bring a bag over to bring the tissues back to our lab.
Then have to prepare quite a few things back in the lab, like forceps, scissors, ice box, solutions etc.
(see! doesn't it look like you're gonna do some operation? HAHAHA)
and then, hmmmm, I think I shall not bore you with the rest of the protocol.

But anyway, it seems quite fun. :D heh heh.

Oh & we went around the lab today, to know the facilities etc. To orientate us.
There's a cold room & a dark room in the lab.
Cold room - damn shiok!
Dark room - damn cool! Cos there's this teleporter like thing inside! You stand inside this capsule-like thing, turn the door, & you're in a different place! Hahaha! Cool right!

Went through so much, that I can't remember everything.
Haha, anyway, I was telling Cheryl that the lab is totally unlike school's lab.
I could hardly see the bench surface! LOL. xD

Anyway, I keep seeing them developing films for blots
but I don't know if we'll ever need to do them.
I totally forgot about all the blotting techniques already!
Arghhhh, really need to dig my notes out to read!

And we're given a second assignment about hRap1 and hRif 1 knockout mice. (I'm doing the 2nd)
Supposed to find out if they're commercially available, and if they're not, we're supposed to come up with a plan on how to make the knockout construct! :\

But anyway, this particular line in her email caught our attention best:
"I also intend to have you 2 work on some mice work later."
WHOOOOOOOOOOO. :D

Oh, by the way, results are out!
& thank God I passed everything! (to my surprise)
Agnes was just asking if results are out today.
& immediately, TP's sms came! I almost had a heart attack. (not prepared you know!)

Results weren't awesome at all. :(
but at least I don't need supps. I think I'll screw up my SIP/MP if supp papers are in the way. Don't you think? Like the revision that you have to do, on top of your research etc. I think it'll drive me crazy.

Why can't I ever hit at least a B for my core modules?! :(
& MGEN's final paper had to kill me so badly. Dammit.

But, I'm just so happy that I'm able to pass everything. :D

While 'The Proposal' is showing in the cinemas,
I'm here stuck at home doing up a proposal.

A proposal about the translocation of telomeres and telomerase in normal somatic fibroblasts, cancer cells and stem cells.

Geeeee, is this MGen that I'm seeing? :\

Given one day (tmr) to do up the proposal & to submit it by tmr night.
Then report again on thursday to start work proper.

Went for the meeting today, & all the lab members are all so young!
Alot of them are from uni, & the girl that I was talking about ytd is actually the lab manager (issit? Or smthg similar. uh oh, I can't rmbr) & she's just like what I've guessed, a fresh grad. Haha.

She talked to us today, asked about the stuff we learnt, and what we might be doing.
One of it would be to culture the cells taken from the cancer patients from NUH. (NUH is just beside only)
Sadly.. Cheryl, no mice leh. ):

Went for lunch tgt with them at NUS engine school.
Their fishball noodles cost $2 only! 2 fishballs, mushrooms, fishcake (all the normal fishball noodle ingredients) and the portion is huge!
Okay, not that big that I can't finish, but for $2, it's alot!
So much better than TP mann, and this is uni! Oh mann.

Okay, I think I'm gonna use my blog to keep track of what I'm doing for attachment.

Day 1 of Internship
met up with agnes at buonavista (jerome was very late la, didnt wait for him).
and we reached CSI at 815am! then we're being asked to go home cos our supervisor is in labour!
hahaha, don't know whether to cry or laugh. LOL.
but anyway, this girl called Leng Lee (or is it Leng Li?) saw us when we asked the guard if we cld go in to look for our supervisor at 8.30am.
So she came to us & told us about it.

Well, so TADAH! I'm home right now!

But I need to dig for my copy of CV & scan in my photo!

By the way, Lenglee looks really young. Wonder if she's a fresh grad or what.

Cos I was thinking of just going much much earlier on monday. :\

Went for Pre-SIP Briefing & we finally got our placement results.
My mind wasn't focusing on what the lecturers were saying actually.
(that's why I don't really rmbr about the logbooks & workbook stuff)
yeah, cos my mind kept wandering off to the placement.
can't help but think about what I'd be getting.
I had all sorts of feelings before the placement were released. haha.

Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI)
Yes, i'm not lying but the acronym is really CSI, just not Crime Scene Investigator.
hahaha, I know everyone wld wish that it was that CSI right? ;D

Liason Officer (LO) will be Dr. Annette.
Hmmm, I'm alright with her. :D

Working Hours: Mon-Fri, 8.30am - 6pm

It's around NUS.
Just checked the map..
& if only it was located nearer to the main road, then I wld have a direct bus from my house!
haha, yes, super direct! don't even need me to walk to the station, cos the bus is just below my house.
But still, at least I don't have to travel like my counterparts living in the east. (:

pay is of course not very awesome at $440, but it's at least better than none.
besides, it's the learning process that mattered right? (hahahha. trying to be politically correct?)

GOSH, I CAN'T WAIT TO DO ALL THESE THINGS AFTER EXAMS!
Yesssssss, the feeling of liberation & freedom! (for a while before SIP starts)

Haha, I wanna see the items on this list get struck of one by one! :D :D

1. I wanna go feast on some japanese fooooooood! Sushi! Ramen! Unagi! Whatever!
(you glutton! heh)

2. Go out there & meet up with my girls whom I haven't done so for I don't know how long. :(
(haha, by the way, it's not only one group of girls that I'm talking about here)

3. Fellowshipping with the cg (w/o feeling guilty!) that I've got a pile of work waiting for me to finish. Hahahah ;D

4. Get high & turn sg upside down with the nonsense people! Hahaha!

5. Sit infront of the computer & watch videos! Haha! I'm so gonna watch all of BigBang's vids.
(since there's no new vids on JJ) muahaha, I'm gonna watch all their variety shows & die infront of the com, laughing. Or probably, dehydration - from drooling too much. :D cos TOP is plain HOTNESS.

6. Do a new blogskin? As much as I want to, but I'm loving this skin way too much lehhhhh :\

Why do you have to prank me this way?

I tried to count how many marks I lost and secured
& I can say I've easily lost AT LEAST 10 over marks.
(just trying to make the number smaller by saying 10 over cos it's definitely much more than that)

Secured? I really don't know.
After checking my answers with my notes when I got back home, I daren't count on anymore.
I made careless mistakes with that 6marks question on a topic that was so easy to score & that I was damn confident of.
And another 2 questions in which I made a big, fat mistake. (similar mistake)

I hate it when teachers give all the hard questions only during exams & never once during practice or quizzes! :(
& for this year's paper, it seemed like he changed all the focus to the things that we've never focused on for last year.
I took out last year's main & supp paper & compared it with the paper today.
I hardly see any similarity between them.
Meaning: I focused on all the wrong stuff this time round.

Argh, I wish I had someone with me now.
So that I can compare the papers & rant about it. Pfffft.

Damn. I shld've gotten the list from her ytd afternoon.
Would've definitely saved me much time & probably helped alot.

Quick update!
LAST Practical test is finally over! :D
I did my SC injection but not my IP injection.
it's a long story as to why I didnt do IP. so I'll skip that.
sex determination of the mouse was alright also.

Blood collection & gavaging was okay as well.
I looked like I screwed my blood collection, but I still managed to get blood in the hematocrit in the end. (so... done!)

Gavaging was crap.
I hope he didn't realise that I didn't measure the distance from tip of nose to xiphoid only after I said I forgot.
If that's the case, I can crash the wall for digging my own grave. :\
but oh well, gavaging was really really smooth this time round, unlike what happened during lab sessions. hahaha. ;D

okay, that's all I'm gonna say for lab.
crazy days ahead for me from now on till after LAST's paper on wed.

I'm not someone who falls or trips over things very often.
even when I do trip, I don't usually fall.

but recently, I've been getting hurt quite alot.
my right knee has another bruise to it again. (pain ah!)
in a short span of about a month or so, my leg is scarred and bruised.
especially the right knee. :(

must be the sneaker's fault. wear & tear uh.

but behind him/her, they talk about how bad he/she is, about how they dislike him/her, etc.

throughout my 19 years on earth
I think God has given me the ability to be patient & love those who're not so lovable,
or in a not-so-nice way - irritating.
to spend time with them, befriending them & talking to them.

yes, sometimes certain things they do still irritates me
but I've learnt how to accept them & love them for who they are.
but God, I can never ever do that alone. Englarge my capacity!
